US Republicans have kept a seat representing a conservative district in the state of Wisconsin, while a former fighter pilot was leading in preliminary results from a special election in California.
Tom Tiffany, as Wisconsin state legislator, defeated Democratic law school professor Tricia Zunker in a special election in the states 7th Congressional district, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
With 77% of the votes counted, Tiffany was ahead with 57.7% to 42.3% for Zunker, the newspaper said. Zunker had hoped to be the first Native American elected to Congress from the state.
Meanwhile, Mike Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot, was leading in preliminary results from a special election north of Los Angeles, the Times said.
With 76% of the votes counted, Garcia was leading Democratic California state legislator Christy Smith by 55.7% to 44.3% in the states 25th congressional district, the Times said.
Both Republican candidates were endorsed by President Donald Trump.
The coronavirus epidemic has created more uncertainty in this years US presidential and congressional elections.
US Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden said last month Trump will try to use the coronavirus pandemic to postpone the countrys November election in an attempt to stay in power.
The 73-year-old president has come under fire for turning his daily White House coronavirus briefings into campaign events, rallying his base and taking swipes at his critics such as Biden, who is sheltering at home.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in April that Democrats "must" ensure that Trump doesnt delay the November elections.
